Built in 1990 as a Radisson, the hotel never opened, because it was discovered just before completion that the builders had constructed a hotel 1/3 bigger than they had zoning approval for.
The hotel sat empty for 21 years, before finally opening in 2011 as the Sheraton Wilmington South Hotel.
The hotel closed in 2020 due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was bought by New Castle County and converted to a homeless shelter.
