Though licensed in 1857, the pub was mostly rebuilt in 1865. The author Conan Doyle was a customer. Americans frequented the pub during the 1st world war, and nearby Hereford Square was turned into a baseball diamond for games with locally based allied troops. The pub name comes from the sovereign coat of arms presented to the City of Hereford by King Charles I.
