A Cistercian house founded by St Bernard of Clairvaux and 12 of his monks in 1132. Rievaulx became one of the wealthiest monasteries of medieval England, but was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1538. Very impressive ruins in delightful surroundings. Currently in the care of English Heritage and open to the public.
