At the west side of the Jerónimos Monastery, besides the Maritime Museum, there is the Planetário Calouste Gulbenkian.
This planetarium in Lisbon was built in 1965, project of the architect Frederico George. Most of the money for its construction was given by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It is managed by the Portuguese Navy, as part of its cultural institutions, such as the Maritime Museum.
The planetarium has a 25 metre diameter dome and there are astronomical shows throughout the day in Portuguese, English and French. These shows explain the movement of stars and the solar system.
