The historic Illinois Building was the work of Rubush and Hunter set the tone and the standard for the architecture surrounding the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in the circular heart of Indianapolis. The Columbia Club, Circle Tower, Guaranty, and Illinois Buildings—all designed by Rubush and Hunter in the 1920s—create a respectful, complementary context for the Indianapolis Monument. All four use limestone as the dominant building material.

On the 1925 Illinois Building, dark green marble distinguishes the first two levels. The building displays elegant decoration on the exterior—massive bronze lamps, cast stone panels, an ornamented cornice—but, like its historic counterparts, it lets the Monument be the main show.

After years of vacancy, the building was purchased by Indianapolis-based Keystone Realty Group in 2013, which began rehabbing the 10-story building, starting with the ground floor, where Chicago-based pizza chain Giordano’s and Cleveland-based Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse, both opened in 2016. In 2024, the rest of the building reopened as a 180-room InterContinental hotel..
