Baldwin Elementary School is the newest school under the jurisdiction of the Austin Independent School District. The new southwest Austin school was approved in early 2009 and construction began in June 2009 at a cost of $14 million. The Austin Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to name the school after Ross Baldwin in April 2010. Baldwin Elementary received its first students in the 2010-2011 school year.

The current principal for Baldwin Elementary is Rosa Peña. The school is only the second two-story elementary school in AISD, Mills was the first. It contains 32 classrooms and a maximum capacity of 700 students from Pre-K to 5th grade and 30 faculty and staff members.

During its planning, the school posed challenges for AISD for school boundaries. Boundaries had to be adjusted for many of the elementary schools in SW Austin, most notably the schools of Mills, Kiker, and Clayton.
