Built in 1872 and remodeled in 1905, the art nouveau structure was known for many decades as the Grand Hotel Europa and has been featured in many films, like Mission: Impossible, Fatherland and Swing Kids. It was particularly famous for the decor of its coffee house.

It closed in 2014. From 2018 to 2020 the large rear wing containing most of the guest rooms was demolished. The historic entry building has been restored, while a brand new oval-shaped guest room wing has been built in the rear. The hotel is set to open in 2024, managed by Marriott, as a W hotel.
