This 18 hole track was never mistaken for a championship course, but it did provide a "near-by" golf course where one could play while vactioning at OIB, NC.
The two toughest holes were both Par 4s, numbers 8 and 16.
There was a lone tree, nearly in the middle of the 8th fairway, that gobbled wayward shots. It was struck by lightning on numerous occasions and finally was taken down which changed the character of the hole immeasurably. As a added bonus on the 8th, you were only a two hundred yards, or so, from the Ocean Isle Beach Airport Runway. Late on Fridays, when many planes landed, and all day on Sunday, when the planes departed, you were treated to a show as you played number 8.
The 16th hole was, by far, my favorite. It was the classic risk/reward hole. The hole was a sharp dog-leg to the right. A safe tee shot left one with a 190-210 yard shot to a relatively firm green. A gambling tee shot cut over the waste area to the right of the fairway and landed on a fairway that sloped towards the waste area. A well-struck tee shot along this path left one with a 140 yard shot. If only there had been more holes like this at OIBGC.
Depending on the winds, a relatively long hitter could nearly drive the 3rd, 4th, 9th and 12th holes, all of which were Par 4s. The par 3s required decent tee shots especially the 15th.
All-in-all, a fun golf course that would never be confused with Pinehurst #2, the Ocean Course at Kiawah or even near-by courses The Thistle and River's Edge.
Now being developed for real estate potential, it is but a memory.
