Sunset Valley is a small incorporated town located within Austin's boundaries. The town measures 681 acres and had a population of 749 in 2010.

Sunset Valley first started as a large area of pasture land. In 1835, Theodore Bissell would be granted 25 labors of land by Mexico and Texas. These lands would soon be sold to a variety of buyers, M.H. and Clarence Flournoy would buy the land in the early 50s to create a subdivision.

On September 13, 1954, the people of the area voted to incorporate the community. They succeeded, and Sunset Valley was established. Clinton Vilven was elected to serve as the first mayor of the town.

The first water system was purchased by the city from the Flournoys in the late-50s. Natural gas lines were installed in Sunset Valley in 1965. Cable TV was first used in the area in 1975. The city hall and a new water system were both built in 1977. Sunset Valley Elementary School, the only school in the city was built in 1971, and the Burger Athletic Complex was built soon after.

The government consists of 1 mayor and 5 council members. The mayor is Barbara Wilson and the council members are Liz Wright, Bruce Smith, John Moore, Rose Cardona and Nancy Porter.
