interesting place, Russian Orthodox Church, 17th century construction, object of cultural heritage of federal importance (Russia), Orthodox church

the pretty white Church of Saints Michael and Fyodor, the Chernigov Martyrs, dedicated to Prince Mikhail Chernigov and his companion Boyar Fyodor, envoys to the Mongols who were killed in the 13th century because they refused to renounce their Christianity. Legend has it that Batu Khan had them trampled to death beneath wooden boards. Their bodies were returned to Moscow where they were buried alongside the tsars in the Kremlin's Cathedral of the Archangel Michael.

In 1675 this cube-shaped brick building with five green tile-covered cupolas replaced an earlier wooden church. The tall, thin blind drums of the cupola are in contrast to the alternating rows of broad pointed kokoshniki that descend to the decorative band below the cornice. It was closed during Soviet times and used as a warehouse, but has been open for worship since 1993.
