Hell in a very small space: Location of the besieged 'Lost Battalion', roughly 550 men of the 77th Division (NY). Ordered to advanced uphill against entrenched German forces, they were quickly cut off and attacked relentlessly over five days in Oct 1918. HQ was unaware of their location which lead to numerous friendly fire deaths via artillery. Their position was smaller than the grid I've added, maybe 25 by 125 meters. Two-thirds were killed, wounded or captured in some of the toughest hand-to-hand combat faced by American forces in WWI.
