Mariner Mountain's summit is snow covered year-round and covered with glaciers. Originally called Holy Cross Mountain because of the conspicuous white quartz cross in the rockface, this cross is clearly visible to mariners out at sea in the summer months and was used as a reference point when sailing up the west coast. The mountain is visible from Tofino, located 36 km to the south.
