"Kudineerina Katte" in English means a pond made to provide pure drinking water.

This is a strange but real story. This pond was the source for pure drinking water for most of the town before 1960. The whole pond was protected by barbedwire fence. 2 Police personnel were appointed to look after this lake & were present all the time at the entry gate to the pond. Only ladies with cleaned utensils were allowed inside the gate to fetch drinking water. Swimming, bathing, washing clothes were strictly prohibited in the pond.

The size of the pond present in the map today what we are seeing is only the 20% of the original huge pond. The original pond had occupied a large area specially towards the left side as seen in the maps today.

The original pond had the one & only opening Gate near 5 Lights near the petta school ground as seen today. There was no school, no ground, no APMC market in 1960 all of that was a beautiful pond fully fenced & protected. The original pond stretched from 5 lights to Mehedevia circle , then till ESI hospital in Tattekere road, then Bada Hazira to the kaveri handicrafts on Bangalore - Mysore Road back to 5 Lights. The original Bangalore - Mysore Road was passing in front of 5 lights & into the town. Then in late 1970's & in early 1980's the urbanization in Bangalore & Mysore lead to increase in vehicular traffic between the cities, so there was a need for a bypass road to avoid vehicles entering the town. This situation started the beginning of the end to this historic pond. The proposed plan for this new bypass road was somewhere in the center of this pond splitting the pond into two portions. The pond was getting water from nearby police training school hills , some elevated places & from few lakes which all are situated on the right side portion of the pond. I wonder why the concerned authorities have not bothered to connect both sides of the pond by a small bridge or by huge pipes so that natural water could reach the left side of the pond. Because of this reason within few years the left side portion of the pond dried up completely & petta school, APMC Market, small layouts, police station all emerged in the place one after one.

As of today the water in this pond is no where fit for drinking, full of dirt & silt. But one noticeable thing is it has a lot of beautiful Lotus flowers growing in it. I have seen that few locals have used these flowers to make money. Few foreigners & other people travelling on this road who love Lotus flowers are ready to pay a lot of money for these flowers. I have heard that long back in 1980's few foreigners unknowingly paid 100rs for a single lotus. So lot of people had made it a business those days. Even today it continues...
