A Jacobean almshouse, also a Grade I listed building. Founded in 1619 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury in the reign of James I. Although the place had been termed as hospital, but it was never a "hospital" in the modern sense of the word but a place to offer town centre accommodation within a sociable and supportive environment for local elderly people.
