BC Hydro's Campbell River hydroelectric system is comprised of three power generating stations. Upper Campbell Lake discharges through the 65 MW Strathcona Generating Station (G.S.) into Lower Campbell Lake. Lower Campbell Lake is the headpond for the 47 MW Ladore G.S. Ladore discharges into John Hart Lake, which is the reservoir for the 126 MW John Hart G.S., Upper Campbell Lake is the storage reservoir for all four installations.

The John Hart Project was completed in 1947 by the BC Power Commission, BC Hydro's predecessor. Water is carried by three penstocks to the six unit, 126 MW powerhouse located downstream from Elk Falls.

BC Hydro is currently replacing the 60-year old generating station with a new plant of 135 MW capacity.

There are several hiking trails and viewpoints around the powerplant. Elk Falls Park is a must-see destination with spectacular waterfall and old growth forests.
