Currently an active BAE storage facility (Assumed conventional munitions), Heapey was used for the storage (and possible exctraction) of the Lithium isotope Li-6 for the detonators of nuclear weapons as part of "Project Chrystal" during the late years of WW2 and the post war/Cold war years.

It is rumored that Heapey is the location of the "Strategic Steam Reserve" but this is highly unlikely as the site is far removed from any railway lines although it did have a branch off the nearby Chorley Railway some years ago. The SSR would supposedly have been Britains backup transport and distribution infrastructure in case of a nuclear attack as the resulting EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) as obviously steam trains have no electrics.

The Fact that many steam trains simply "Disappeared" is the only thing that brings any sense of credibility to this theory , as the there would also have to be a huge associated coal reserve. The government has never confirmed or denied the existence of the SSR.
