  In late May and June of 1973, multiple witnesses in the Sykesville area reported encounters with a large, foul-smelling, ape-like monster. In several cases, police were called to investigate. The Sykesville sightings stopped in mid-June, although late in the month there was a similar report from the town of Winfield.   None of the Sykesville Monster sightings were satisfactorily explained, although theories ranged from an escaped inmate from the local Springfield State mental hospital to the (predictable, but never verified) escaped ape from a zoo or circus. Others pointed out that "The Legend of Boggy Creek" - a popular movie about Bigfoot - was in theaters at the time.
