Many high tech and technology research centers are located here. There are many new centers being constructed. Research ranging from stem cells to artificial intelligence is taking place here. The zone will consist of public, private for profit, and non profit centers. Universities, businesses, and government are opening research centers in this area. This will be the largest scientific research area in Greece and is expected to give Thessaloniki the nickname of "City of Innovation." The actual extents of the zone begin around the Foinikas area of Thessaloniki, wrap around the municipalities of Pylaia and Thermi and ends by the Thessaloniki Airport to the southeast. The location was selected to take advantage of the nearby universities. Thessaloniki has the largest university in Greece, and has the largest population of college students in the country.
