New St.Germans Pumping Station

The new station went live at the end of April 2010, following successful commissioning of four of the six pumps. This matches the pumping capacity of the old station. Transfer of operation from old to new was critical as no pumping was available over this period.

The transfer took four days which was quite an achievement given the amount of work involved.
More recently the cofferdam has been removed and the remaining two pumps commissioned bringing the station capacity up to the design of 100 tonnes of water per second, at full load and against an average tide. Demolition of the old station is now complete.

The Middle Level Commissioners have responsibility for the flood defence of
26,000 properties and 100,000 people as well as a large area of high grade
agricultural land in the Fens, between the River Nene and the Old Bedford
river. To achieve this they have recently opened the new St Germans
Pumping Station which can move 100 tons of water per second, and is the
largest flood risk management pumping station in the UK.
