The city of San Pedro de Macoris is the head municipality of San Pedro de Macoris Province in the south coast. Also called Sea Macoris to distinguish it from San Francisco de Macoris, a city in the northeast, in the Cibao. According to the Population and Housing Census 2002, the township has a total population of 217,141, of whom 105,070 were men and 112,071 women. The urban population of the municipality was 89,21%, being one of the municipalities in the country with the highest rate of urbanization. The municipality covers an area of 136.04 km2.2 The city is on the shores of the Caribbean Sea on the west bank of the river mouth Higuamo or Macoris.
