  • Having a fine North-facing aspect, the gentle slope behind the Cathedral was built out for prosperous City figures at an early stage. Some of the properties are being cared for as 'significant' houses of Nelson's founder period. Melrose House and Fairfield House are at the Southern end of Trafalgar Street, and both are run for heritage preservation. They are fine houses, kept in good repair. Melrose has a very decent cafe as part of it's public persona. The Cathedral Square is considered Dress Circle in Real Estate marketing, although it contains very many quite simple houses... the architectural vernacular of Nelson is timber bungalow style, with several "California" styled bungalows scattered across town. Cathedral Square was also the site of the original jail, and jail graveyard - now a vacant plot of un-developed land. Local sentiment has is as unwise to consider building on the land - superstitions being hard to shakes even now.
