Round Island Channel Lighthouse

While nearby Round Island Lighthouse is one of the most photographed in the country, this hideous concrete and steel monstrosity, which most visitors do not even realize IS a lighthouse, is not.

The steel cylindrical tower houses a flashing red light only visible at night, and the base houses the fog signal.

The extremely narrow Round Island Channel is critically important for Great Lakes freighters who use it as the main connector between the St. Mary's River/Soo Locks and Lake Michigan.

During the navigational season upwards of 20 ships a day transit the channel.
