This is a State Mosque which was completed in August 1968. It was named after Sultan Idris Shah II (1963-1984) in September 1978 in conjunction with his 54th birthday. The need and aspiration to build a State Mosque arose when the State Capital was moved from Taiping to Ipoh during the Japanese Occupation in World War II. The three big mosques in Ipoh at that time were Dato' Panglima Kinta Mosque, Syarifah Mosque and the Indian Muslim Mosque which were unable to accommodate all Muslims, especially for their Friday prayers, as well as other religious functions. On 4th September 1964, the State Government made the decision to build the State Mosque.
