The site was formerly owned by Sacramento Crushing Corporation, which illegally dumped construction and demolition debris here. In 1996, the Chicago Department of Environment took it over and cleaned it up at a cost of $9 million. Renovation into a green building started in 1999, at a cost of $5.4 million. Environmental features of the building include: solar panels, rainwater collection for irrigation, recycled building materials, smart lighting, a green roof, and a geothermal exchange system.
