production, open-pit mine, coal mine
The Hambach opencast mine of lignite. It is a large open-pit mine (German: Tagebau), the largest mine operated by RWE Power AG (formerly Rheinbraun AG) for the extraction of "brown coal" or lignite. Six machines toil at stripping the ground. One machine removes dirt and coal alternatively, and one only extracts brown coal. The Lower-Rhine Basin is the largest single lignite deposit in the world, with an original content of around 55 billion tons.
