Newburgh Junction was built by the Erie Railroad to connect its Newburgh Branch with a shortcut to the mainline. The line going west is the original Newburgh Branch the mainline near Middletown, while the south line goes south directly to the mainline. A section of I87 is built on/next to the shortcut. To the east the line goes to Newburgh.
