The West Point Foundry once had a wharf here for shipping their cannons, but the area enclosed by the railroad right of way is now no more than two to four feet deep.
A few years ago the inner cove gained fame, as it were, as "the most cadmium polluted place in the world." The Civil War era weapons plant had little or nothing to do with the extreme concentration of heavy metals. It came from a nickel-cadmium battery factory set up by the U.S. Army in 1952. The Marathon Battery Company opperated the plant from 1969 until 1982, when it was forced to close by public health authorities.
