Originally a 2 and 4-year college for women founded in 1932, the four-year program merged with Loyola University in Westchester (by LAX) to form Loyola Marymount University (LMU) and the 2-year program was spun off, moving to Palos Verdes and becoming the only private junior college in California.

The university announced plans to merge with Saint Leo University, another private Catholic university. Plans for the merger fell through and Marymount California University closed in August 2022. The Rancho Palos Verdes campus and the residential site in San Pedro were purchased by the University of California.
