Futatsuno-Iwa (Twin Rocks) served as a marker separating invasion site Red Beach One from Red Beach Two. Second Bttn / 27th Marines landed to the left, 1st Bttn to the right.

Lying just beneath the surface, it was also posed a serious hazard to Higgins boats, LSTs, DUK-Ws, and all the other invasion craft that would be coming in under fire. On 17 FEB 1945 (D-day minus two) 92 underwater demolition team (UDT) divers swam ashore at about 11:00am under heavy fire to find and neutralize mines and other defenses. At least two divers from UDT 12 were assigned to Futatsu Rock. The reef was too big to blow up, so they attached two warning bouys to it. By 12:20pm all the Navy divers were back aboard their APDs (transport-destroyers) except one. Carpenter's Mate 1st Class Edward Anderson, M.I.A., was last seen between Futatsu and the shore, trying to dodge the mortar shells falling all around him.
