National Research Center on Camel
Located in the Jorbeer area at a distance of about 10 km from Bikaner city, the National Research Centre of Camel, Bikaner was founded on July 1984. Earlier, this centre was recognized as camel breeding farm under the guidance of college of Veterinary and Animal Science, Rajasthan Agricultural University, Bikaner. This is a government managed centre which is probably exclusive in Asia. Importance of this centre is that, - the National Camel Research Center has about 230 camels out of which three different breeds are reared here. The Centre has a Camel Breeding Farm at Bikaner, which employs Raika's or Rebari's who are neighboring camel breeders and have been in the profession of taking care of camels since the early times. You will enjoy seeing young camels frolicking and feeding as you tour the huge Camel Breeding Farm and treat yourself to some nourishing thick camel milk.
As per the research conducted at the Camel Breeding Farm in Bikaner, a fit adult camel can carry a weight of 19 to 20 quintals for more than 4 hours at a stretch on a desert stretch without any strain.
The Centre has the accountability to conduct basic and functional research for the improvement of camel. Over the years NRCC has developed outstanding laboratory facilities and infrastructure. An elite group of Bikaneri, Jaisalmeri and Kachchhi breed of camels have been developed and maintained at the Centre. Scientists of the Centre are successful in finding out the genetic variation within and between camel breeds using molecular markers. The technique of embryo transfer has been used successfully in producing two camel calves at the Centre. Extensive studies on valuation of camel breeds have been carried out by the Centre. The feed necessity during various stages i.e. lactation, pregnancy, draught has been studied and locally available feed/fodder resources were evaluated by the Centre. The Centre has also generated useful information on double humped camel found in Nobra Valley of Laddakh region.
National Camel Research Center has been identified as one of the important tourist place of Bikaner and is integrated in the tourist map of Rajasthan. The Centre has developed camel museum which magnetizes the attention of researchers and tourist. Every year thousands of Foreign and Indian tourists visit the Centre. The National Research Centre on Camel, Bikaner, remains open on all days from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM for the visitors.
