The Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation, one of the best of its kind in the world, hosts the most representative collection of images from all over Cyprus. The development of icons in Cyprus unfolds in the eye of the visitor in a wonderful way with works from the 9th to the 19th century. Important place in the collections of the Museum held the famous mosaics of the church of Panagia in Lythragkomi (525-530) thirty six pieces of Christ Antifonitis church murals (15th century)as well as icons, all of the masterpieces from the Turkish Army occupied areas of Cyprus. These pieces of art have been recovered after litigation or otherwise from abroad. In the Museum there are also arranged sacred relics, vessels and vestments, which outline the history of the Church of Cyprus.
The Gallery of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation is hosting a unique collection of representative works of art from Europe, Greece and Cyprusd ated from the Renaissance to modern times. It is divided into three sections: (a) the European paintings (15th-19th) mainly with religious and mythological themes, (b) N. Dikaios’s collection with paintings, prints and maps on the Greek Revolution (18th-19th century) and ( c) contemporary art works by Cypriot and Greek artists. This is an excellent collection of works for both artistic and educational value, since it helps the visitor to discover the various artistic currents in different periods, the spiritual, moral and cultural values of each era. Some pieces of art, such as those on the Greek Revolution, the Cypriot Liberty struggle of 1955-59 and the Turkish Troops Invasion to Cyprus in 1974 have a special historical value of the Modern History of Cyprus.
