The Ankony Estate, bounded on the north by Ferncliff and on the south by Rhinecliff-River Road, marks the end of the river-side estates in this section of the district. The mansion of William Bergh Kip, a ca. 1830 Greek Revival style building later enlarged and remodeled with the addition of a mansard roof, was demolished in 1977. A simple, two-story, three-bay, Federal style frame farmhouse (ca. 1800) and an extensive complex of picturesque, late nineteenth century barns, stables and sheds survive of intact.

  • I have an old etching of Ankony during colonial times by Lyth? Would love to share it. rorosso@cox.net
  • The print is the residence of Wm. Bergh Kip, Esq. Rhinebeck, N.Y. On the back a notation is made (probably by Robert's book Shop, 175 west 231st St., New York City, Halifax5-2625. It states" In reply to your inquiry about the origin of the above mentioned print, I beg to say, that it appeared in the "History of Duchess county, N.Y.", Co., of Syracuse in 1882. It originally was printed in black and white and later colored by hand to add to its decorative value. Copies of this book are now very scarce." rorosso@cox.net
