Aged Unite to Organise Rest and Recreation (Autorr) Foundation Centre

Instead of watching television and counting the days at home, senior citizens can go to this recreation centre that allows them to rediscover themselves and enjoy their golden years. Located at Taman Dagang Jaya in Ampang, the centre provides a myriad of activities for the elderly to keep themselves occupied. There will be talks and motivational workshops, cooking classes, handicraft and hobbies like bonsai tree care, flower arrangement, Chinese and English chess, brush painting, karaoke, plus physical exercises such as walking, yoga, tai chi and qigong. Voluntary workers ranging from physiotherapists to motivators from different fields will be engaged to manage the centre and conduct workshops.

The brainchild of the Autorr centre, Lin Chua said that loneliness is a prevalence in senior citizens and many of them live a sedentary lifestyle. "The old folks deserve to have a good time and feel loved after having slogged their whole life. Nowadays, a high percentage of senior citizens are depressed and lonely because their children have no time for them. They feel neglected when their children are busy with other commitments. In a nutshell, the centre is the place for them to spend their golden years in a meaningful and beneficial way," Lin said.
