Now a days Dibrugarh town is situated on the bank of Brahmaputra. But before the great earthquake of 1950, Brahmaputra was flowing at about 5 to 6 kilometre away in the north direction. A small river named Dibru (The name Dibrugarh came from the garh, that means embankment on the bank of Dibru river) was flowing almost parallel to Brahmaputra from northeast to southwest direction. River Dibru met with Brahmaputra at this point. The word Mohana (in Assamese and Bengali) means the junction (mouth) of river with sea or confluence of two rivers. Here was the ferry ghat of Dibru river to go to the other side of the river. Thus the name Mohanaghat came into existence. But due to drastic change of topography of land due to the earthquake of 1950, Brahmaputra changed its course and grabed Dibru river. Now there is no trace of the old Dibru river near Dibrugarh. The place where old Dibrugarh town was situated is now in the centre of river Brahmaputra.
