  • About 1964 I recall poking about in the bushes below Waterloo Row by the River Saint John. In a somewhat flat area I came across a peculiar collection of rough, unmarked stones of no great size. I thought this curious and eventually recognized that it was some sort of primitive cemetery. Later I mentioned the matter to Miss Isabel Louise Hill, who was kind enough to cater to the questions of a young teenager and she mentioned that it was were the first Loyalists who perished in that hard winter were buried. I was unaware at the time of my own connections to Loyalists, but thought it a dismal thing that they should be so forgotten and their burial place left left hidden and dilapidated. It is in this manner that much History is lost. It is to Miss Hill, others like her and those inspired by their eager interest that the recovery of that History is sometimes possible.
