  • This is the only temple of Yogmaya in the entire world and is as ancient as the tale of Mahabharatha. The Deity is worshipped as the Mother of all and is Considereded one of the personal Powers of the Divine. Lord Krishna was born in the prison of Mathura and at the same time a girl was born to Yashoda and Nanda in Gokul. Krishna's father Vasudeva and mother Devki feared that Devki's brother Kansa, the cruel ruler of Mathura would want to kill the baby like seven others born earlier. Baby Krishna was to be protected anyhow. With the birth of the Lord, the prison was full of Divine Light and Fragrance...The gaurds of the prison fell deep asleep and doors flung open. Guided by the unseen hand,Vasudeva lays Krishna in a wicker basket, escapes the prison and rushes to Gokul. He crosses the river Yamuna amidst a heavy rain, thunder and lightning; while Sheshnaag shelters baby Krishna from the raging elements. The holy river Yamuna rose past all its levels to touch the holy feet of the baby Krishna and the stormsubsided thereafter. Vasudev reaches Nanda-Yashoda's house and replaces baby Krishna with baby Yogmaya. He rushes back to Mathura and places her next to Devaki. Next morning, on hearing the news of the eighth born child, Kansa rushed to kill the girl. He paid no heed to Devki’s plead of sparing the girl. He held the child by her legs and just as he was about to bang her against the wall, the girl vanished into thin air and an Aakashwani pronounced, " Kansa! Your slayer has been born and is safe in Gokul". The girl child was none other than Yogmaya (divine illusion) According to Shvetashvatar Upnishad. God has many Divine powers, just like: knowledge (called chit tattva), almightiness, action (for example, the creation, maintenance and dissolution of the universe) and His most important personal power (swabhaviki) called yogmaya or ahladini shakti.” (6/8) On the other hand, Maya may be understood as the phenomenal Universe of perceived duality, a lesser reality-lens superimposed on the unity of Brahman. Maya may also be visualized as a guise or aspect of the Divine Mother (Devi) concept of Hinduism. In the Hindu scripture Devi Mahatmyam, Maya covers Vishnu's eyes in Yoganidra (Divine Sleep) during cycles of existence when all is resolved into one. By exhorting Mahamaya to release Her illusory hold on Vishnu, Brahma is able to bring Vishnu to aid him in killing two demons, Madhu and Kaitabh, who have manifested as thoughtforms from Vishnu's sleeping form. Shri Ramakrishna often spoke of Mother Maya and combined deep Hindu allegory with the idea that Maya is a lesser reality that must be overcome so that one is able to realize their true Self. Krishna’s sister, also known as Yogamaya. She is Krishna’s internal energy who arranges His pastimes and fosters spontaneous love for Him by making His intimate devotees forget He is God. The aspect of Krishna’s personal energy who enhances His loving pastimes with His devotees by putting the devotees in benign illusion, making them forget that He is God. When Krishna descended to earth, Yogamaya appeared as His sister, Subhadra. Mahamaya, the material energy of illusion, is her partial expansion Yogamaya is not a deity who is otherwise worshipped in hindu mythology.
