In 1909 the Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company (AND) started a pulp and paper mill in Grand Falls. The mill ownership changed in 1965 to Abitibi-Price Inc. (which today is Abitibi Bowater).
The mill was a cornerstone of the community for a century, but the mill shut down in 2009. The province expropriated the assets of the mill, however later plans to turn the mill into a pellet-producing facility fell through, and the mill may be demolished soon. Environmental cleanup of the mill site has been a subject of concern, and in a recent court ruling, the province was held responsible for these costs, expected to be between $50 and $100 million.
