  • There was once a checkpoint there, but it was abandoned many years ago. This is one of several unmanned "border" roads on the reservation
  • I was here in December and it is a bizarre place. There are at least two roads crossing the border and I couldn't even see the border stones etc. (there was a lot of snow around so they may have been buried). Between Fort Covington NY and this reserve there are a number of unmonitored roads that are prime for smuggling people/goods etc from Canada to the US and vice versa. From there on the QC side, stuff can go via boat to other parts of Canada.

  • EACH COMMUNITY AS HIS 1% OF BAD PEOPLE AND CRIMINAL, NO ONE ARROUND THE WORLD MAKES EXCEPTION. IT'S THE RESPONSABILTY OF A COMMUNITY TO FIGHT THIS 1%. 99% ARE GOOD PEOPLE BUT HOW MANY OF THEME FIGHT THE 1% ????
  • Based on the fact that the only news you ever hear from the Indian reserve is about smuggling of people, cigarettes etc. or the fact that there are a lot of casinos and dodgy looking places selling cheap cigarettes etc, many people feel the reserve is a hot bed of smuggling. I'd be surprised to know how many people have jobs in 'nice offices' in the area. I'm sure there are lots of good people in the area; unfortunately the media doesn't talk about them... If you live there, please educate us more about the good people.
  • There are four (4) cigarettes factories located on the American section of the Res. Four? Just a coincidence? Ontario and Quebec, with much higher sin taxes, are just over the border. A high % of the Res population is involved in the production/smuggling. With brutal winters, its a non-tobacco growing area. The stuff has to be hauled from Southern States. Can't be cost effective to sell it in the States.

  • The area of Akwesasne receives only negative press due to sensationalism of the media. Shock value sells! The majority of Akwesasne residents are hard working citizens of sovereign territory. Many of our youth and adults receive college and university degrees, we have our own doctors, nurses, teachers as well as a tremendously skilled labour force in every trade (electrical, construction, etc.) As with every town or community, you have people who make poor decisions and Akwesasne is not different. The media over-amplifies the situation and people form their decision of Akwesasne based on these reports.
  • Not the Akwesasne reserve I've been to that subsists on casinos, dodgy gas and cigarette sales and smuggling people and other stuff.
  • How can you have a dodgy gas sale? Just because there is no tax on it? Take a look. Akwesasne, a part of what is left of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, is a sovereign territory of the Kanien Kaha:ka (Mohawk). Therefore their "dodgy" gas and cigarette sales are simply only subject to whatever taxes the Council places upon them (which to my knowledge is none). Honestly, we can all learn from a nation that can embrace capitalism so effectively without losing their values.
