Built by the New York & New England R.R in the late 1800's, the yard was used by the New Haven Railroad as a freight transfer point between different branch lines. It was also used as an engine terminal for helper service over the Maybrook Line to Danbury, Connecticut. Steam helper service was abandoned after the New Haven bought Alco FA's in 1949, although extra diesel locomotives were kept in Hopewell Jct for emergency power and to switch the Beacon Branch. West of here, the Maybrook Line is abandoned to Maybrook, N.Y., and the Beacon Branch is now the mainline. The yard, Beacon Branch, and Maybrook Line to the N.Y.-C.T. state line is owned by Metro North, with a junction with the Hudson Line in Beacon, Harlem Line in Patterson, and New Haven Line in Danbury.
