PhilRice Agusan formally started its operation on August 13, 1990. Its first experiment area was donated by Gov. Consuelo V. Calo. From the 12.8-ha farm located at Brgy. Basilisa, RTR, the area of the station was increased to 22 ha and 19 ha in Los Angeles, Butuan City under a leasehold agreement seed warehouse that can accommodate 2,000 bags.

PhilRice Agusan is being strengthened to serve as PhilRice’s nutrient management center. Zinc deficiency is among the prevalent problems of rice farmers in the area because of frequent rainfall. There is a running joke that in Agusan they have the ‘wet’ and ‘very wet’ cropping seasons.

The station participates in the yield trials for the national cooperative testing project and seed production. It also conducts technology promotion activities in partnership with the local government units.
