Victorian breakwater constructed in Victorian times to create a naval harbour at immense cost. Was once several hundred yards longer but the whole breakwater is subject to periodic storm damge and the end portions have been abandoned. The maintenance of the current structure is paid as part of the Channel Island's contribution to the UK defence budget.
