Named in honor of Lt. Joseph Patrick Kennedy, Jr. who was killed in August 1944 while flying & calibrating a remotely controlled flying bomb, this Gearing-class destroyer was laid down at the Fore River Shipyard in Qunicy MA on April 2nd 1945, and commissioned in December 1945.

She served as a member of the Atlantic Fleet for her entire service life, eventually taking part in the 2 combat tours in Korea, the Naval Blockade of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis and as a recovery ship for the Gemini Space program. Ship was towed out to sea to be used in the movie "Thirteen Days" to reenact the Cuban blockage which she participated.

She was decommissioned and struck from the Naval Register on July 1st, 1973 and ownership of the veteran Destroyer was transferred to the Battleship Cove Museum where she resides today.
