Mount Thielsen (elevation 9182 feet) rises in a sharp spire that is easily recognizable towering above the eastern shore of Diamond Lake and all over this part of the southern Oregon Cascades. Volcanic in origin, Thielsen's razor point attracts lightning strikes during summer thunderstorms. Its nickname is "Lightning Rod of the Cascades."
