Florence Lawrence was the original movie star, the first movie actor to be given screen credit and what was considered a super star salary. She became so popular that she could demand the credit and the money, and the studio mogul, Stuart Blackton of American Biograph, had to comply or lose her to a rival.

She was born Florence Annie Bridgwood in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on January 2, 1886. She committed suicide by taking a lethal dose ant paste combined with cough syrup, in her Beverly Hills home, on December 28, 1938. Florence Lawrence was only 52 years old.
