Newcastle, a military base for the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). Like the hill stations in India, this was built at height for a more moderate temperature, and to be above the malarial lowlands. The masonry wall along the road is embrazoned with the crests of many of the units which were stationed here over the years.

Newcastle was founded in 1841 as a training site and convalescent center for british soldiers. It is situated at a hight of 1220m above sealevel. This made it a safe place against malaria. The road to Newcastle is very poor and is regulary damaged after floodrains. It is advisable to use a all-wheel drive to go there. It will give you some fantastic views as far as Kingston harbour. From time to time the road is closed to the public, since it crosses the centre of the parade ground.
