recreation area / ground, hill, landscape, dump
Located beside the largest open-pit mine for lignite (Hambach) in Germany and worldwide, this is Sophienhöhe, an artifical hill 290 metres above sea level. The hill is very visible from the distance, since the normal local surface level is about 95 metres. It is a man-made result of the storage of the soil material (tertiary and pleistocene gravels) excavated through mining.
After being recultivated since 1976, it has become a wonderful recreation area for hiking, trekking and cycling.
