mountain, volcano
This is the Mount Unzen volcano on the island of Kyūshū.
Unzen’s deadliest eruption occurred in 1792. The east flank of the Mayuyama dome collapsed unexpectedly following a post-eruption earthquake, creating an avalanche and tsunami that killed an estimated 15,000 people. This remains Japan’s worst-ever volcanic-related disaster.
The volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft and Harry Glicken died here on the 3rd of June 1991 along with 40 other scientists and journalists when they were caught in a pyroclastic flow.
