Iwema Steenhuis

Netherlands / Groningen / Leek / t Pad
 museum, house, interesting place

The family Iwema lived in the Stonehouse. The stones are big format bricks, often used for the building of churches in the Middle Ages. They are called Cloister-mop, plural moppen. Many churches have such kloostermoppen in their construction. You see the difference with the clean masonry, schoon metselwerk, of the houses.
This Steenhuis is the only stonehouse in the province of Groningen that kept its original form. The frontpart of the house was built in the end of the 14th or in the beginning of 15th century. Most people lived in huts, made by clay, wood or sods. The place is located in Niebert, and has a museum, open from 01-05 till 1-11, Tu, Fr, and Sa from 13.30 till 17.30. The garden is open for you, with stinzenplants, steenhuisplanten, and also with a beech, to have some shadow if the sun is shining. You can make a walk of about 6 km, with old drinkingplaces for the cattle, alder girdles, roes, hares, if the last two species are not elsewhere, with start and finish from the parkingplace, parkeerplaats museum. For excursions, also in other areas of Groningen, consult: www.groningerlandschap.nl. You can get/order a set with 9 hiking trails and two biketrails in the province of Groningen.
