The Gray Freshwater Biological Institute building (1984), later Freshwater Society is a notable modern work by Elizabeth "Lisl" Close (1912-2011) and her husband Winston "Win" Close (1906-1997). It opened as a state-of-the-art research lab. It is a major building in the area known as Navarre, a part of Orono. The Institute moved to Minneapolis and the building is now occupied by Cargill's Freshwater laboratory. The project received an Honor Award from the Minnesota Society of Architects.
