Lighthouse was built in 1909 altogether with bridge connecting Mykineshólmur with Mykines island. Since then it was inhabited by a few people, which task was to manage it. In 1928 radio beacons were installed there and radio navigation were possible around the Faroe Islands, also Mykines received phone connection to the world for a first time. In 1940 a few unidentified planes were seen near lighthouse and it was switched off. Next year German aircraft attacked it three times. In 1945 lighthouse was set up again. In 1970 it was fully automatized, and Mykineshólmur was abandoned again (there were 22 of them back then).
